Happy April! We have a lot happening this month with our programming and have expanded to workshops in Edmonton and Peace River. You can make moss bags, ribbon skirts, quillows or just visit with our Elders Tea & Bannock at the Prevention Offices. Our program focus for April is the Youth Leadership & Life Skills Program. Paper copies will be distributed at the Nation level with priority going to Elders. You can also look at the Digital copy here and on Facebook.

Our second edition of the Newsletter - âcimowasinahikanis is out after many revisions! Our highlighted program for March is our Prenatal/Early Intervention Program and is our way of celebrating International Women's Day on March 8th.
Physical copies will be delivered to Elders in the communities of Loon River, Lubicon Lake, Peerless Lake and Trout Lake next week.

Treaty Day Winners 2023

Treaty Days are ongoing at each of our Nations in the KTC area. KTC CFS continues to plan and hold children's activities like face painting, beading, water activities, inflatables and a children's entertainer. We also have our free kid's and adult draws, children's snacks, cotton candy and slush. As always, we bring our prize wheel where everyone wins a prize! This year we also entered a float in the Nations parade.

KTC CFS was out and about in the three Nations with children's activities like face painting, tie dye t-shirts and bird house painting. We also had our free kid's and adult draws, children's snacks, cotton candy and slush. Not forgotten was our prize wheel where everyone wins a prize!

AwaÅ›ak Wiyasiwêwin Act Passes

On November 19, 2021 the Awas’ak Wiyasiwewin (Cree for Children’s Law) was passed by members of Loon River, Peerless Trout and Lubicon Lake by a vote of 616 - 70 of the participating voters. This is a historic moment for our three Nations in transforming Child & Family Services delivery to our children.

The final draft of the AwaÅ›ak Wiyasiwêwin has been approved by the KTC CFS Board for our three participating Nations. The 3rd Reading will be held at various locations from November 8 - 18 with a Vote held after each Reading. Everyone attending will receive a participant bag.

Kee Tas Kee Now Child & Family Services Draft Act

KTC Child & Family Services in partnership with three member Nations is in the process of developing it's own Child & Family Services Act. This will create a system where Loon River First Nation, Peerless Trout First Nation and Lubicon Lake Band administer, operate and are the sovereign government body to exercise their rights for decision making on the best interest of their children. This will be for on and off reserve children across Canada.

We will post the calendar of events as we receive them from each Nation. KTC CFS will be at each community with children's activities like beading and face painting. COVID-19 and KTC CFS

The KTC Child & Family Services office will be closed as of 12:00pm on March 20, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All staff will be working from home and can be contacted by their clients by cell phone or email. KTC CFS is an essential service and we will continue to provide all services to clients and families. All of our First Nations have held their annual Treaty Days in their communities. KTC CFS provided a barbeque lunch and bike raffles for each community. Indigenous Services Canada also attends to provide treaty annuity payments to individuals. The Nations provide entertainment, raffle draws, children's activities and other events. KTC Child & Family Services brings car seat safety to its Nations

Northern Alberta has seven new Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPST) today after a three day training session and certifying clinic in Slave Lake, AB. Participants from the health centers of Loon River, Whitefish Lake, Woodland Cree, Peerless-Trout and Lubicon Lake attended the session hosted by KTC Child & Family Services and facilitated by the Child Passenger Safety Association of Canada.

KTC CFS has moved!

After many years of our office being in Atikameg, we have finally made the move and are now in the more central location of Loon Lake! We are better able to serve our five Nations by being in closer proximity to each community.
Staff made the initial move on May 28, 2018 and the clean up crew is still taking care of the last details at the Atikameg office. (2018/07/20 - We are fully moved into the new building and operational)
Our new mailing address is KTC Child & Family Services, Box 279, Red Earth Creek, AB T0G 1X0. The municipal address is Lot #10 of Loon River Commercial Park. Our actual physical location is 1 km South of Red Earth Creek, next to Loon River Esso Gas station, which is right on Highway 88 on Loon River land.
Our new office will still have the same 780-767-2116 and fax number 780-767-2120.

Treaty Day Community Pictures and Winners 2017

KTC Child & Family Services have been attending Treaty Day festivities as each community has their celebration. Face painting has been well attended by children and youth and staff have been brushing up on their painting skills. We also have free prize raffles for adults, children and youth.
2017 Traditional Cultural Camp

KTC Child & Family Services will be holding the annual Traditional Cultural Camp on July 10 - 14, 2017. This year’s camp is for children aged 7 – 12 and will held at Haig Lakes in the Cadotte Lake area. Children experience traditional activities such as tanning moose hide, making dry meat, fishing and snare setting.

Each community plans to have new and old activities for their people to participate in. KTC Child & Family Services workers will be in attendance as usual providing face painting, tattoos and bike draws for children and youth for each community.
KTC CFSA opens new sub-office

KTC Child & Family Services is excited to announce that we have opened a new sub-office in Slave Lake, AB.
The new office will be known as the KTC CFS Wellness & Training Centre and is located at #102, 229 3rd Avenue NW. We will be utilizing this office space for Family Group Conferences, supervised visits, meetings, training and workshops for our clients and community members from our service area.
We envision that using this space will provide an incentive to parents to attend workshops because of its urban location. Families will also be able to visit their children without inhibiting their normal exuberance as this will not be a normal office space. Training for clients or workers can occur without the normal interruptions that accompany standard offices.
This location will be open on an “as needed” basis for KTC CFS workers or trainers and will not have daily hours. Please see our “Upcoming Programs” link on the home page of our website for workshop dates and registration information.

Different workers from KTC CFS have been attending the festivities as each community has had their Treaty Days. Face painting has been a fun experience and well attended by children and youth. Adult, children and youth prize draws have been held and enjoyed by all.

Summer is here bringing warm, sunny days and the beginning of our First Nations annual treaty days. Some of our communities have one day celebrations while others have multi-day events. KTC Child & Family Services workers will be in attendance providing face painting for children and youth for one of the Treaty Days for each community.

We provided face painting services, temporary tattoos and prize draws for children and adults. KTC CFS had a foster parent recruitment table set up as we always need foster or kinship parents.

2014 Traditional Cultural Camp

KTC Child & Family Services held the annual Traditional Cultural Camp on August 11 – 15, 2014. This year’s camp was for children aged 6 – 12 and it was held in the Loon River First Nation area. This is the second year that KTC has held the camp for the younger aged children. Previously, the age range was 13 – 17 year old youth and was that age group for several years.
Theoren Fleury - "Don't Quit Before The Miracle"

KTC Child & Family Services was proud to present Theoren Fleury and his inspirational message in Cadotte Lake on August 23rd, 2012. The presentation was primarily for the Youth of our three communities as well as any adults that chose to attend. Theo shared his experiences both good and bad throughout his life; both in and out of the hockey community. Theo signed his book as well as various items for community members after the presentation.

Community BBQ at Bearwalk 2009

The BBQ at Bearwalk was a community supper that was held after the Domestic Violence workshops were held in all three communities. It was a celebration after the completion of the workshops. KTC Child & Family Services volunteered to hold the BBQ and cook the meal. Participation was great with about 300 people attending both the supper and children’s and adult games.

The Deputy Minister of Children’s Services visited the KTC Child & Family Services office in Atikameg in July 2009. This was celebrated by a wagon ride with the Board of Directors and a BBQ lunch.
