Awaśak Wiyasiwêwin Enacted!

Seventeen months after Nation members voted in favour of implementing their own child well-being law, we are proud to announce that as of May 15th, 2023, Awaśak Wiyasiwêwin has been enacted and will be in effect across Alberta.  This is a historic moment for our three Nations in transforming Child & Family Services delivery to our children.

Leadership of the Founding First Nations have each signed a Band Council Resolution exercising their legislative authority with respect to child and family services.  Both the Coordination Agreement and the Fiscal Agreement have been signed by Loon River First Nation, Peerless Trout First Nation, Lubicon Lake Band, His Majesty the King in Right of Canada and His Majesty the King in Right of Alberta.

The Member-driven, and collaboratively developed law puts the Nations in the position to determine what is best for their future generations with respect to child and family services delivery.

The time has come to enact our own child and well-being law; Awaśak Wiyasiwêwin and see the dawn of a new day for our children and our families.
